Household Start-Up Kit

For a family of four

(Most Karen families are 5 or more)

 

4 - 8 Comforters and/or blankets

4 - 8 Towels

1 – bundle of bulk wash clothes from Wal-Mart or Dollar General (These can be used for bathing or kitchen)

4 – Pillows

4 – Pillow case covers and pillow cases

Sheets (we usually like to wait to see what size mattresses are donated – if you have some to donate, send them anyway)

Mattress covers

1 – Basic set of dishes for 4 place settings (at Wal-Mart the cost is about $8.00)

1 – Set of glasses (6-8)

1 – Basic set of cookware stainless steel bottoms (at Wal-Mart the cost is about 25.00.  We prefer the stainless steel to the non-stick because of flaking)

1 - Toaster

1 – Basic set of knives (about $4.00)

1 – Basic set of flat ware (you can buy individual pieces at Wal-Mart 3 / $1.00)

1 – Basic set of cooking utensils ($3.00-$4.00)

2 – Sets of potholders and dishtowels

1- 2 Large bowls

1 – Colander

1 – Baking pans (cookie sheet, 9 x 9 or larger baking pans)

1 – Vacuum ($60.00 – 70.00 with extra bags if necessary be sure its working if donated

1 – Mircowave ($50.00 - $70.00) Be sure it works if it's donated.

Foil, plastic wrap, baggies

Kitchen cleansers including auto-dishwashing detergent

Bath cleansers, toilet and tub and tile

Floor cleaner – general all around use.

Shampoo, conditioner, soap, toilet paper, paper towels, tooth paste, tooth brushes

1 – Large plastic tub on wheels.  This can double as furniture and storage.

If you'd like to donate food, these are the foods we recommend.

Meat  Any kind especially whole chickens, but they like it all but it is expensive

Fresh Vegetables – Most anything except potatoes.  I've never seen them eat potatoes

Fresh Fruit – Most anything

Some frozen convenience foods (chicken tenders and such)

Snacks and fun foods for the kids.
